The newest model SCORP and this thing is awesome! If you're looking for a gimbal, this company is really doing great!
The FeiyuTech SCORP gimbal is a not too subtle nod to scorpions, with their backwards-curving tails. The gimbal itself has a sinewy, high tech appearance with a main frame that folds back upon itself, offering multiple positions for filming by simply changing your grip on the frame.
Like the earlier AK2000 gimbals, this comes with a folding tripod/handle extension. You'll use this tripod when balancing the gimbal.
As I first opened the package, I was delighted to see that they included a nice padded carrying case.
Inside is the gimbal, a box of accessories, arca-compatible camera mounts, and the folding tripod. The accessories included an allen wrench for tightening the mounting plate screws, a thumbscrew and lens support, and several camera interface cables to support multiple brands and models, each labeled as to the type of cable. Be sure not to confuse the micro USB with the multi, they look very similar.
After charging the gimbal per the included quick-start guide, I mounted and balanced the camera. Another nice upgraded feature is user customizable index marks on the 3 axis. Once your camera is balanced, you can move these index marks so the red dot aligns with a hole in the frame so that you can quickly return to your settings when re-mounting your camera. This is important because you'll have to reposition the gimbal axis to get it to fit back in the case again.
When I powered it on, it booted up in Chinese, and I wasn't able to figure out how to switch to English. I downloaded the Android app (which also is partly in Chinese) and watched some instructional videos and was able to get the menu switched to English.
I ran the auto calibration for the motors, and there is a lot of buzzing and humming while it determines how much torque it will need to use to keep the camera balanced. The key to success is making sure you first have the camera manually balanced as perfectly as you can so the motors will only have to act against the camera's inertia and won't have to fight gravity too.
Similar to their prior offerings, the SCORP can control basic camera functions like start/stop recording, shutter release, focus, and other functions, but this depends on the particular camera being compatible with external control. Generally, most good quality cameras (Canon, Sony, Nikon, etc) made in the last 2 or 3 years should have some functions available for gimbal control. Otherwise, you'll just have to "roll tape" a couple of seconds before the action and edit out the portion where you press the record button.
If you are able to do shutter control, the gimbal can be used to shoot panoramas and timelapse videos.
One thing I wish you could do with this gimbal is power it on and adjust settings in a "motor off" or "standby" mode without the camera mounted. You cannot power it on without the camera to make all the axis balanced.
I really like the new screen position, shutter trigger and control wheel positions. It definitely feels like it is going to be more geared towards right handed users, but all the shutter buttons are on the right of the camera to begin with, so lefties will have to adapt. I would like the touch screen to be just a little bit bigger for people with big fingers, but it works fine as-is.
A thumb control joystick right under the touch screen display handles pan and tilt functions, though you could presumably assign the tilt function to the control wheel if your camera doesn't support external zoom or focus control. The product page has pictures of a zoom control motor, but one isn't included. Hopefully it will be available as an accessory in the future.
The Android app needs a lot of improvement, but this is a new product and I imagine they will update it as time goes on and they receive customer feedback. As it stands though, I'd have to rate the app at 2.5 stars. Fortunately, the gimbal can be operated entirely without the app.
I do miss the real rosewood grip panels from the AK2000 but that's purely an aesthetic thing. Functionally, this gimbal is a lot better, and it still has an attractive appearance. I'd like to see a safety tether you could wear to keep it from hitting the ground in the event of a drop, but that could just get tangled up in the gimbal if you aren't careful.
Another cool feature is a built-in tripod that you can use in a pinch when you don't have the folding tripod with you. There are two plastic legs that can be folded down and away from the frame, forming a tripod with the hande as the third leg. This doesn't allow the SCORP to sit vertical like the folding tripod does, but it will protect it from being set sideways on the ground, and you won't need to turn it off first.
If you already have the AK2000 gimbal, it's pretty feature-rich. But you will need to buy the accessory handle for low angle shots. The SCORP's design offers the same grip positions without needing a second accessory handle.
In use, it's pretty comfortable.
It's a revolutionary product like I've never seen before.
New design, a lot of new features and useful touch mini-display - this is the Feiyu Scorp in a nutshell. How good it actually is? Check out our detailed review.
This 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal for DSLR and Mirrorless Camera is called SCORP because, I guess, the very interesting design it has, I would say is because of how the integrated hanging handle is positioned, that makes it look as a scorpion.
Grip feels solid and comfortable to hold. It is very smooth to maneuver.
It has a very good size and fits my backpack. It has a folding bracket that can be used as a tripod if you happen to forget about bringing yours, which is a very creative idea I happened to watch in a video.
It comes with with a good built case, with quite some accessories on it. Tripod stand, cables to plug it in and quick release plates and a camera holder.
It took me quite some time to get it balanced the right way, probably because i am a newbie, so i had to play with it, read the instructions a couple of times and watch some videos. Once it was done and fully operational, it was a good experience using it.
Another great feature is the magic wheel, it allows you to control any direction that the gimbal supports.
Even if you are being aggressive when moving, this gimbal compensates it and stabilizes the image greatly. It feels very steady.
Touch screen is not the best, I kind of find the interface kind of poor compared to other gimbals, but it has everything you need, that wouldn't be something to complain about. Switching from horizontal to vertical is easily done with just pressing a bottom.
Battery wise, it doesn't last as long as I expected it, but I am still very happy with it. It is an affordable gimbal compared to other ones, great new design and all the must have features a gimbal needs.
The max payload is about 2500g (balanced status).
Around 1200g(with quick release plate and built-in battery,without camera, lens etc.) Aluminium alloy and plastic.
1. Make sure to fully charge the gimbal before turning on;
2.Make sure all the axis locks are unlocked, as shown in pictures below.
3.Make sure to balance the gimbal in every axis, until the camera stays balanced at any angle.
Tilt the gimbal and support it by the foldable legs to check if the pan axis is balanced.
Balanced status:
Imbalanced status:
Around 13 hours, not removable.
The charging port is under the multi-function knob, and above the trigger button;
It takes about 3 hours to fully charge with a 5V-2A charging adapter;
It supports fast charging up to 18W, by which it takes about 1.6 hours to fully charge.
For iPhone users, search “Feiyu SCORP”in APP Store to download the APP; For Android users, search “Feiyu SCORP”in Google Play Store to download it. You can use the APP to update gimbal firmware, adjust gimbal parameters, remotely control gimbal directions etc.
Make sure the camera is tightly mounted and balanced in every axis; Tap on Motor Power > Auto Tune > Start Tuning, then wait until tuning completes.
It is splash proof.
Hold up the arm for a bit with one hand, then you can move the arm and tighten the screw easily. Release the arm after finishing balancing the axis.
